Hona Le Noka
"Hona Le Noka," meaning "There was a river" in Sesotho, was a poignant and evocative theatrical production co-written and performed by a collaborative team of six poets, including myself. This 4-day show, held in collaboration with PopArt Theatre in Maboneng, Johannesburg, delved deeply into the multifaceted experiences of being a woman in South Africa.
The show's narrative was elegantly woven through spoken word and performance, creating a tapestry of stories that explored themes of gender-based violence, queerness, sexuality, race relations, white privilege and more. Our minimalist approach to the set, utilizing only beer crates shifted between scenes, added a unique and symbolic dimension to the storytelling. Each repositioning of the crates served to transport the audience through different scenes and emotions, reflecting the fluidity and resilience of the women's experiences portrayed.
